Meet St. Nicholas — Patron of Generosity and Joy

Today, most of us picture St. Nicholas as a jolly giver of gifts in a red suit—cheeks rosy, laughter booming, and a sleigh full of presents ready for Christmas morning. We see him in store windows, on wrapping paper, in children’s books, and woven through some of our favorite holiday traditions. He’s become a symbol of joy, generosity, and festive cheer.

But behind that familiar image stands a man of deep faith and quiet purpose—a real bishop whose life of humble service and courageous love inspired all the stories that came after. His generosity reached far beyond toys and treats; it was rooted in compassion, sacrifice, and a desire to reflect God’s goodness in simple, meaningful ways.

St. Nicholas was a 4th-century bishop known for his compassion, courage, and quiet generosity. Born into a Christian family and blessed with an inheritance he didn’t keep for himself, he used what he had to serve the poor, protect the vulnerable, and offer hope wherever it was needed.

One of the most cherished stories tells of a father with three daughters who had no means for their future. Under the cover of night, Nicholas slipped small bags of gold into their home, ensuring they could begin new lives with dignity. He never asked for recognition — he simply cared, quietly and purposefully.

Over time, Christians came to see him as a protector of children, travelers, families in need, and in various traditions, even brewers and those who shared drink. In medieval communities, brewing was part of daily hospitality, and Nicholas — known for generosity and provision — naturally became a spiritual companion for those who welcomed others to their table.

His feast day is celebrated every year on December 6, a moment in the early days of Advent that invites us to slow down, notice the needs around us, and practice simple, intentional charity.

That’s why he’s the first figure in our Drink Like a Saint series.
Not because of excess or indulgence, but because he reminds us how even simple moments — a shared drink, a warm gathering, a thoughtful gift — can reflect faith, purpose, and joy.

Our St. Nicholas drink sleeves are a small tribute to that spirit: a reminder to celebrate with gratitude, to offer kindness freely, and to let everyday life become a reflection of something sacred.

🍻 How to “Drink Like St. Nicholas”

To “drink like St. Nicholas” is less about what’s in your cup and more about the heart you bring to the moment:

  • Share generously with someone who needs a bit of joy
  • Invite someone to the table who might feel alone
  • Give quietly, without expecting to be noticed
  • Celebrate with moderation, gratitude, and warmth
  • Let simple moments become sacred ones

May his story inspire us to pray with intention, explore with courage, and create with purpose — living lives gently marked by faith and open to the goodness God pours into the world.

If you’d like a small reminder of his joyful, generous spirit, our St. Nicholas drink sleeves were created for exactly that purpose—something simple, practical, and meaningful to celebrate the season and spark conversations rooted in faith. We pray they bring warmth to your gatherings and joy to your table.
